9398 - shortlist

This weekend I reviewed the entries and made my own shortlist of the entries for the "You design it, We make it!" Lego contest for a new coach on the 9398 set. What a great work everybody made and what a huge amount of professional Lego designers we have amongst us. Lego company has a luxury, they will NEVER run out of suited personnel in this live time!! My first approach was to eliminate all entries that didn't match the rules set out by Lego COmpany. What is a pitty because I saw a lot of great designs of Lego vehicles, for all those please post them on sites like Flickr or Mocpages.com to share them with an even bigger Lego fan community, if not already done so.

During browsing the entries, I decided to make two different lists. One list for designs most suitable as alternative set and one list with great designs. I reviewed based on my opinion would suit, ones I should buy as alternative set. But due to my own set limitation I would have to left out so many other great designs I liked to show so I came up with a third list "Creative Designs" to contain funny, odd and creative designs.

What strikes me was the enormous amount of SUV like creations. Some with additional attributes like little cranes and a lot with winches. Besides the winches missing another thing is that apparently a lot of people miss an engine in the original design because an engine was added by a lot of people even working ones with an additional PF to make it turn. Also the wheels were a lot of time replaced by the Unimog ones, to be honest I like those more myself as well.

What I really liked were the few ones coming up with a total different approach like a big quat including hero factory driver or space vehicles.

Finally people made a lot of good combinations with other models like the Unimog set 8110 or the Supercar 8070 and the 8081.

What to my opinion would be a big improvements is adding PF-lights to the alternative design. Alltogether some more functionality in the body of the car would make me buy an alternative model like; PF lights, wing doors, winch and/or pneumatics for either the wing doors or additional attributes like a little crane.

Below you will find my point of view on the designs. The 'Great Designs' I distilled based on thoughts as; awsome design, a lot of detail, nice body curves, a lot of functionality but too complex or too many parts to get chosen as an alternative design. The 'Creative Designs' I selected based on originality, funny, extraordinary, even suited as an alternative design but to explicit, so for a small audience. Finally the list with 'Alternative Sets' I determined based on what I should buy and what I consider as a suitable one for a bigger crowd.

4x4 Crawler competition

Lego has a competition for technic Lego.If you make the winning design you new top will be a limited edition for this model.

My design is based on the Mercedes-Benz w123 version 4 doors. I really wanted to make a commercial car design. I am really fan of this model 9398. There are tons of possibilities to make alternative models and use the engines to motorize other big designs like the Unimog of last year.

Also you can increase the drive speed a explained in this article before.

You can vote for my entry here on the international Lego website. Enjoy the other entries and don't forget to vote.

Greek Antikythera Mechanism from Lego

Engineer builds operative facsimile of Greek Antikythera Mechanism from Lego

Just stumbled over this unique experiment with Lego. Apparently the old Greek already had a kind of clock work to predict eclipses. However this knowledge got lost. In 1901 treasure hunters found the piece in a wreckage another number of decennia past by before somebody found out what it was for. Now the technology is recovered again and these guys rebuild it with Technic Lego, very impressive. Watch the video for detailed clarification.

Pimped 9398 4x4 Crawler

This is my new catch. It is a great car technically. The new engines for driving are awsome. They are really much stronger than the old ones. Design of the car is ok. I miss an engine block that wouldfit great.

Besides that the car is really strong in ground control it can take the most steep and uneven grounds. But driving speed is disappointing. I know it is power or speed. So after playing on all kind of climbing situations I made some investigations to speed it up.

There are 2 places where you can easily change the output speed of the car in the current design. In these 2 places you can easily exchange the position of the small and big gear, which means increasing speed.

First one is the easy one: the output of power is via a small black gear 12 tooth onto a tan gear 20 tooth which decreases the speed of the engine by a ratio 5:3. You can easily exchange the 2 gears and reversing the configuration to a speed increase by the same ratio. This is already an improvement.

The second place is just before the power goes into the steering portal axle housing. This one is a bit more complicated. You have to decouple the steering and remove a part of the bottom to get the 2 gears free for exchange. Besides that you have to do that for every single wheel. Especially decoupling the steering is a bit tideous. However after half an hour you increased the speed with twice the ratio 3:5 and that is FUN!!.

As explained earlier more speed means less power so it is not so good in steep climbing anymore now it can still take considerable obstacles.

So now is time to build the Dakar truck with steering at the front because it is a bit silly to have a truck with rear steering.

New PF Engine explained

Techbricks spend some time and engines on the new L and SV engines. These engines are introduced in the Lego set 9398 Crawler 4x4.

The L-engine is stronger than the M-engine but in a different smaller shape just 3x3 in stead of 5x5 for the M-engine.

The SV engine is a servo motor so will remember position and so can easily be used for steering.

However for much more details about the inner world and reductions of these engines read the blog on Techbricks.
